When I started my career in the electronics component industry in the mid-1980s, electronic communication was very straightforward. There were two flavors, datacom, and telecom, and both used copper wire to create 100% of the connections. Today it is quite a bit more complicated, and as a result, can be very confusing. A vast amount of voice and data transmissions are now done wirelessly using a fast-evolving and growing number of protocols. This has enabled an explosion in connected devices that has no predictable endpoint. This presentation will look at the various wireless communication technologies, use cases for each, and their place in the IoT and Cloud Computing ecosystem.
